CQC
Our March, 2017 meeting was a fun and informative mix of old and new technologies that captivated all those present. Vince Kumagai (KIØRB) provided the main topic of discussion and demonstration - he presented his project to restore a Hammarlund SP-600 JX-14 receiver. The SP-600 is known for its massive proportions, super-smooth tuning and great performance for the technology available in that era (1950s). Unfortunately, all early production SP-600s used leakage-prone molded capacitors that require replacement when undertaking a project of this kind.
The SP-600 Vince is restoring was manufactured sometime around 1953. The Allied Knight-Kit Star Roamer he brought along was manufactured sometime between 1965 and 1972 before the company closed. Vince provided a lot of background and history, along with construction and safety tips, for this and other projects. Well done Vince! |
For a bit of Show and Tell others provided some quick demos throughout the meeting. Vice President Ed Comfort (KCØZLR, CQC # 832) demonstrated the jyetech.com DSO 138 oscilloscope that he built from a kit (It was reviewed in the January 2016 issue of QST. Pete (WK8S, CQC # 037) demonstrated the mcHF QRP transceiver (manufactured by MØNKA in the United Kingdom). Shel Radin (KFØUR CQC # 889) demonstrated the Bioenne battery power he used for his National Parks On The Air operation last year. Club president Scott Garcia (KCØHSV, CQC # 795) provided construction tips and techniques on the Elecraft K2 he had built.
